India has always been a nation of color and diversity wrapped in various ethnicities. And this shows in the plethora of clothing styles that Indian women prefer.

Indian textile industry has witnessed great transformation through the centuries. This is due to the influence of various establishments and colonization that took place during the evolution of Indian history. As soon as the wave of independence hit the shores of Indian land, the natives got wind of global fashion and they have never looked back ever since.

However, regardless of the rapid inflow of western fashion, every state in India has their own traditional attire that has not lost its charm just yet. Apart from that, there are clothing styles that are worn all over the country with great enthusiasm. Below are a few such styles that women all over India simply love to wear.

Saree 

Nothing portrays grace and femininity in India like a properly worn saree. From deities to mothers, in India, saree has styled women from all walks of life.
Indian saree is basically around nine yards long and three to four feet broad piece of cloth which is used as a wrap-around fabric over petticoat and blouse. The beauty of this garment lies in the way a woman chooses to wrap it around her body. There are a countless number of ways one can style it. However, the most common way is to drape it around the waist, keeping the other end over the shoulder.

Dupatta/Hijab

Dupatta is what reflects a very important part of an Indian woman’s personality and that is modesty. Dupatta is usually worn over salwar kameez or Kurti depending on the style of the attire. But it has surely seen its share of change over the years with more and more western fashion coming in our way. About the color and fabric of dupatta, it is usually chiffon and is supposed to match the color palette of the base clothes one is wearing. However, there are other variations of dupatta like silk dupatta, satin fabric dupatta, cotton dupatta, etc. that are used depending on the occasion.

For Muslim Indian woman, it is hijab that works the same way. Hijab usually covers the head as well as the chest area. Muslim women these days style it in various ways to look elegant on a daily basis.

Salwar kameez

Salwar kameez initially originated in the culture of Punjab and Kashmir in India. It is basically a traditional dress which has two pieces of clothing. The first is the kameez, also called kurta, is basically a long upper dress. The other one is the salwar which is a loose trouser like bottom wear.

This outfit turned out to be so comfortable and customizable that women all across the country wear it in some form or the other. This led to the conception of a plethora of variations in this particular attire.



Burkha

Burkha is an Islamic garment worn by the ladies of muslim community. This is a single piece of fabric, generally black colored, that covers the whole body of a woman except the face. The main goal behind wearing this kind of garment is to break free from women objectification. Muslim women wear it voluntarily with pride since it does not allow for discrimination based on outer appearance.

 From the perspective of fashion, burkha did bow down to the surge of modernization and underwent a fair amount of change in the past few decades. Unlike olden times, these days you can see women wearing form-hugging stylish burkha made of fabrics like georgette and silk. They also come in colors other than black and are often equipped with embroidery and stone work for the occasional dress-up.


Lehenga Choli

Lehenga choli is a much-celebrated outfit option among women all over India. It was first seen on women of Gujarat and Rajasthan, but its elegance washed over almost all other states in the country. Just like salwar kameez, It is also a two-piece dress. Basically, choli is the blouse and lehenga or ghagra is the long skirt for the bottom. Dupatta or chunni is optional with it depending on the specific style and occasion. This is well-known everywhere in the nation because it is the most loved wedding apparel for Indian women.

Every year the countless number of Indian brides go for lehenga choli as their wedding dress. This is why you can get this two-piece dress in a variety of colors, designs and fabrics.
